Selling a car online

A clear, honest listing gets fewer time-wasters and quicker offers. Here's what makes the biggest difference.

1

Take clear, well-lit photos from multiple angles

Cover the exterior from all sides, the interior, the boot, the dashboard, and any wear or damage. Natural daylight works best.

2

Be upfront about any faults or history

Mentioning a known issue or past repair up front builds trust, and saves you fielding cancelled viewings once a buyer spots it themselves.

3

Price it fairly from the start

Check similar listings near you, or try Buy My Car to get real offers directly from traders.

4

Write a clear, honest description

Mileage, service history, number of owners, and your reason for selling all help a buyer feel confident enquiring.

5

Reply to messages promptly

Buyers move on to the next listing quickly if they don't hear back. A fast reply is often the difference between a sale and a missed one.

6

Never accept a deposit from someone who hasn't seen the car

Be wary of buyers offering to pay a deposit by bank transfer, or via a courier or "collection agent", before they've viewed the car in person.

7

Meet buyers somewhere safe

A public place or your home in daylight hours is safer than an unfamiliar location. Bring a friend or family member if you can, especially for a test drive.

8

Have your paperwork ready

Keep the V5C logbook, service history and MOT certificates to hand, buyers will want to see these, and it speeds up a genuine sale.
